The creamy combination of marshmallow and caramel called the Modjeska, made for more than 100 years by Bauer’s Candy; folk art and craft work at the Kentucky Appalachian Artisan Center in Hindman; and Wheeler’s Pharmacy in Lexington, where meals are still served at an old-fashioned lunch counter. The Modjeska is a hand-dipped caramel marshmallow that is the signature piece produced by Bauer’s Candies in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. They’re named in honor of famed Polish actress Helena Modjeska, who performed in Louisville in the late 1800s.
